Thrice-crowned NBA MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Nuggets lost 147-123 against the Miami Heat.

The Serbian center was hurt in the latter stages of the opening half during an inadvertent coming together with team-mate Jones.

His teammate stepped on the foot of the big man, who promptly collapsed to the court grabbing his knee.

The veteran player, who tops the league season in boards and dimes, recorded 21 points and eight dimes in the contest prior to sustaining the setback.

He will undergo an MRI scan on Tuesday to evaluate the severity of the injury.

"Instantly, he understood something was wrong," said Denver head coach David Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever who gets hurt, it's tough to see, particularly somebody as important as him. We will know more tomorrow."

"We will continue as a team. Obviously, right now, I'm more concerned just about him personally and the letdown of going through a situation like that."
