The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and fun. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and the video site.
