Seconds before his name was called, a anxious thought raced through his mind. He revealed he was thinking, "Not a Formula 1 star once more."

"Tonight represents a fantastic night for golf," the champion said. "The sport was celebrated in such a big way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a big night for golf, and hopefully we can build upon that."

This time around, however, there was no last-minute surprise. The verdict was decisive, allowing a delighted McIlroy to savor a blockbuster evening for both himself and the team winners, who were crowned the top squad.

Non-Stop Adventures

Instead of opting to attend the official reception, McIlroy was already focusing on his next sporting adventure. After played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was flying right back to Florida.

"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I am anticipating a little bit of downtime over Christmas."

Hunger for More

However, McIlroy stated he has no plans to become complacent, even after securing the set of all four majors earlier in the year. "My belief is I've got a more to give in me," he asserted.

"Further big titles, order of merit titles, international events, that's the target. But as long as you feel like you can keep improving and have the desire, that's the essential part."

Squad Celebration

Meanwhile, Ryder Cup partner Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to receive the team award, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his close friend's individual success.

"Those are the moments that will stay with us forever so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "Seeing Rory pick that up, I think he deserves it so much."

When reminded that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood grinned before adding, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"

Future Goals

His goal is to secure his initial major championship next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still craves more success. "If you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

United Hopes

Before McIlroy left, one final question was raised. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be persuaded to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"Provided that they stop conceding so many goals on their own pitch," he answered with a grin. "They're getting better. There's a little bit of optimism around."

On the back of a truly spectacular season, it's understandable that the champion golfer is focusing on the upside.
