The movie, though, may align too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, within Russia, it functions as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and the country's entertainment industry have worked together to forge a made-to-measure version of Putin. This figure is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands beyond what he shows.

Cinematic Reinforcement

A notable instance is a TV series launched last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a fictional security officer inexplicably chosen to “save” the nation from disorder. While the character's name Mikhail, the message is unmistakable: the savior must be a familiar security officer.

International depictions often end up reinforcing this identical story instead of debunking it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a consequence, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is shown as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to become president. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, desiring permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. Historically, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

Nobody actually pleaded with Putin to accept the role. The presidency was effectively a casting call with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

Analysts concur that the image of him as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his clandestine activities in Dresden do not stand up to scrutiny. Fundamentally, he was an administrator and routine duties, a mid-level functionary not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by the actor's debut as James Bond. The grittier interpretation prompted local outlets and social media to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with Putin’s appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an star popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to portray this choice as a small victory. The film's omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, the president is often an all-powerful presence who never appears on screen. He is hinted at through portraits or orders from on high. In this new film, he at last gets a recognizable face—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it might seek to examine.
