Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time in Prison

He contested justice and the legal system triumphed.

A couple of months following being handed a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democracy, ex-president Jair Bolsonaro at last appears headed to prison.

Anticipated Incarceration

The found-guilty plotter – who's been subject to home confinement in his mansion while a number of legal procedures and petitions proceed – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, during increasing talk that he will be moved to a notorious high-security prison.

Previous Remarks on Convicts

Over Bolsonaro’s long time in politics, the right-wing former paratrooper displayed minimal sympathy for the country's jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we offer those dirtbags a good life?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be screwed, full-fucking-stop. That's my view.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to wind up behind bars, you simply need is not sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”

Jail Destination Speculation

However the possibility of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has horrified allies, a group of four this week toured the facility in an apparent attempt to dissuade the judiciary from sending him there.

Senator Lucas, a senator from Bolsonaro’s political party who was one of the visitors, said he anticipated the elderly leader to be incarcerated in the next 10 days and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe gut issues – the consequence of a life-threatening knife attack during the last presidential campaign – meant it would be dangerous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the condition of inmate food.

During his tour Papuda, Lucas recalled seeing cells holding 40 inmates: “That’s almost one square metre per inmate.

“We spoke to the inmates and they protest, unsurprisingly, of the horrible meals,” added the senator.

Allies Speak Out

He is not the sole person voicing opinions ahead of the ex-leader's anticipated imprisonment.

Writing in a leading daily, one more backer, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, lamented the “brutal” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest unfairness in its history”.

“This is an injustice that gnaws the hearts of many people in Brazil,” Wajngarten wrote.

Mixed Popular Response

That may be correct due to the substantial following Bolsonaro maintains on the conservative side. But his predicted jailing has also pleased the spirits of millions other people who think he should be incarcerated for planning to block his successor from assuming office – and also scheming to have him assassinated.

Reimont Otoni, a representative for the incumbent administration's Workers’ party, said: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dark cell. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in isolation. No one wants Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We want him to obtain dignified care – but dignified handling while incarcerated. He must not persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

Otoni was struck by how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years celebrating the harsh treatment of prisoners, had unexpectedly become aware to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has consistently argued that human rights are not for lawbreakers – opted to visit a prison to learn what situations are really like,” he said.

“The former president is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “shameful, degrading conduct”.

Likely Incarceration Environment

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which now holds about 14,000 prisoners, his expected assigned facility appears to be a close jail for law enforcement and other “particular” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).

His potential cell are considerably more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a distant from the opulence Bolsonaro had while occupying the stunning presidential palace, around a short distance away.

According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 24 sq metres – approximately the dimensions of two parking spaces – and includes a 130 square foot restroom with a bathing area and a 12 square meter balcony. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a television and also a small fridge in his room as long as they were donated by his family,” sources suggested.

Political Responses

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his outcome in the {
