Preparations for Putin-Trump Talks Shelved Shortly Following Hungarian Capital Talks Proposed

There are "no arrangements" for US President Donald Trump to confer with Russia's Putin "in the near term", a White House official has stated.

Recently the US president stated he and the Kremlin leader would conduct negotiations in Budapest soon to examine the war in Ukraine.

A initial discussion between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Foreign Minister Lavrov was scheduled to occur this week - but the administration stated the two had had a "positive" call and that a meeting was no longer "required".

The administration declined to provide further information on why the talks had been delayed.

Earlier Events

Trump had raised the possibility of a Hungarian meeting via telephone with the Russian leader, a just prior to meeting Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his talks with Zelensky had been a "contentious discussion", with those familiar suggesting the president had urged him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

Yet, on this week Trump endorsed a peace initiative backed by Kyiv and EU officials to pause the hostilities on the current front line.

"Leave it as is the way it is," he remarked.

Moscow has repeatedly pushed back against freezing the current line of contact.

Moscow was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Lavrov said on this week, suggesting that pausing conflict would only amount to a short-term truce.

Diplomatic Positions

The "root causes" of the conflict needed to be addressed, the Russian diplomat stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a set of maximalist demands that include the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the disarmament of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its Western allies.

The Ukrainian president stated conversations concerning the battle positions were the "start of negotiations" but that Russia was "taking all measures" to evade negotiations.

He additionally stated the exclusive issue that could cause Russia to "pay attention" was that of the provision of extended-range arms to the Ukrainian military.

Military Considerations

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with the US leader recently preceded reports that the United States was planning to provide distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

Zelensky asserted it was the missile discussion that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The talk about the weapons systems had emerged as a "strong investment" in international relations", he commented.
