Fighters laugh as they travel on the back of a transport truck, hurrying by a row of nine dead bodies and driving towards the descending Sudanese evening sky.

"Look at such work. Look at this instance of mass destruction," one shouts.

The fighter smiles as he turns the camera on his person and his fellow combatants, their RSF insignia clearly shown: "These people shall all be killed this way."

The combatants are rejoicing over a atrocity that relief organizations fear claimed the lives of more than thousands of individuals in the Sudan's metropolis of al-Fashir during October.

A City Isolated from the World

Having held the city under encirclement for approximately 24 months, from the summer the paramilitary force proceeded to consolidate its control and blockade the remaining residents.

Space-based imagery reveal that forces started to build a immense berm - a built-up earthen wall - encircling the perimeter of the city, closing access routes and blocking aid.
