Oscar-Nominated Star Diane Ladd, Known For Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Passes Away at Age 89.
This Oscar-nominated actress the celebrated Diane Ladd has died at the age of 89.
The actress, with filmography spanned Chinatown, died at her home in California’s Ojai. Her passing was shared via an announcement from her daughter, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.
Her daughter, who appeared with her mother in various films including Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my amazing hero as well as my profound gift as a mother”, writing that she was by her side as she died.
“She was an exceptional grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist as well as compassionate soul that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. Her spirit soars with angels.”
Beginnings and Breakthrough
The start of her career included minor parts in TV shows including Perry Mason and the 1970s had her appearing next to actor Jack Nicholson in the classic Chinatown.
That very year, 1974, she performed with Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s celebrated film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.
Later Decades
Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow and humorous film National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and appeared on the sitcom Alice, a sitcom based on the film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
In the following decade, she received another Oscar nomination for supporting actress Academy Award nomination for her role in Lynch’s the movie Wild at Heart in which she portrayed the parent of her actual daughter Laura Dern’s role. The next year she received an additional nod for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred Dern.
“This movie that the late Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she flew Laura and I to London for a premiere and a party dedicated to us,” Ladd shared of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, grasping our hands, and crying, viewing our performance.”
The nineties also saw roles in humorous films Cemetery Club joining her again with Ellen Burstyn, the movie Primary Colors, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s Citizen Ruth, a dark comedy where she played Laura Dern’s mom once more. That period also brought her nominations for Emmy Awards for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
Working with Laura Dern
She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, the David Lynch project the movie Inland Empire and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened. She also appeared with Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins, a legend in The World’s Fastest Indian plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her later TV roles included Ray Donovan, a drama plus Young Sheldon.
Writing and Directing
She additionally penned and helmed the comedy Mrs Munck that included Diane Ladd and former husband Bruce Dern, an actor. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she said. “I’m privileged to have directed him in a movie. In fact, I stand as the only woman in recorded history who directed her former husband. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, if you want revenge, direct your ex-husband.’ Though I’m just teasing.”
Family Ties
Ladd was also the third cousin of playwright Tennessee Williams, who she called “a major inspiration in my life”.
In 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a pulmonary condition and informed she had just six months to live yet she recovered completely after her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
“Should you harness your suffering and not let it back up like an injury, rather utilize it to discover, to clarify the journey for you and those around, then you are triumphing,” Ladd expressed.
