Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a child.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a new signing in spring and was expected to be an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “I mean, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract worth $1.6m with New York in the spring.
