Israelis have gathered throughout the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as talks continued in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The assault saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as hostages. It was the single most fatal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.

"The violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on that day.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the return of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the discussions revealed that an evening round of indirect talks began at 7 PM local time.

The representative said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that intermediaries are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future management of the region

Civilian Feeling

In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, young a woman - whose sibling endured the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas militants - explained: "No location seems like home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will be secure."

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

In front of the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the families of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israeli citizens desire the conflict to conclude in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Situation

At the area of the gathering, grieving people assembled to honor the dead.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, attacks were noted in the morning of Tuesday in the west side district, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"When the night comes, the fear appears with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, described.

"Me and my three children are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me all night."

"Every second we check the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be completed and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had accepted the corpses of several people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the southern area.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated additional dead people had been brought there. A person was died by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south, medics stated.
