Information Available Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Shooting
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have called a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have announced the number of fatalities is 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 people with injuries were taken to hospital.
Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events before the attack, saying they were standing when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the message read.
One Child
A child who was taken to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
