Ghostface OG Star the Actor Is Anxious He Could Spoil the Series with the Seventh Installment.
The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is preparing for a massive family reunion. This new chapter signals the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.
"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.
A Triumphant Return for Fallon Characters
It has been established that three different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Audiences should get ready for the reappearance of the endearing and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original murderous duo, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first time since a small appearance is a long-held wish, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the offer from the series creator.
"I recall the phone call. I remember the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he says. "Therefore I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the decades since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling very nervous.
"The reality is, that's a part that is infamous, like it or not," he explains. "A character that is now represented in each and every Scream mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fandom
Now that production has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the beloved series.
"The outcome is either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a fail," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the movie's be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I don't want people leaving Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
Speculation and Excitement Run High
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's reappearance, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, similar to a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way still living in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of earlier genre films, also is on the table.
Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
