Eurovision Used to Be a Campy Joy – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term emerged several months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This term is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts like child health specialists. Typically, it is uncommon for physicians to treat a minor who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” about the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy in many doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Hell on Earth In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that violations are continuing. Officials disputes these accusations, consistent with how it disavows everything it is charged with. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. And this, we are told, is what international harmony looks like.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that aggression from Israeli settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the projected longevity of an individual in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will likely never recapture the whimsical pleasure it once represented. A contest that was originally built on harmony has devolved into a cynical way to whitewash war.
