Defiant Celtic's manager does not fear the sack but the Parkhead faithful show fury after defeat.
Wilfried Nancy declared he was not afraid of the sack, maintaining, “The team is really close to changing our fortunes,” even after moving dangerously close to the exit with a comprehensive defeat by Rangers.
A Second-Half Collapse Results in Old Firm Loss
The home side were in front their oldest rivals at the interval but a second-half capitulation enabled Rangers to draw level on points with the defending league title holders. The former MLS manager, who was appointed from the MLS, has now been in charge for six defeats in his first eight matches.
“We are together at the club,” insisted Nancy.
Pressed on the speculation, the 48-year-old said: “It’s not on my mind. I concentrate on working out methods to help my team to improve on details.
Fan Fury On Display
The fans made their feelings clear – directed at the board and manager – by gathering at Parkhead. The hierarchy are thought to be considering to re-appoint the former boss, who enjoyed a successful interim spell before Nancy was hired, should a change be made.
“The outcomes [that leads to pressure]. So this is the situation for the moment. Yet when I say this is the reality, that is not a sign that I am giving up. Not at all. The message is we are on the cusp, extremely close to turn things around.”
Focus on the Details
Nancy highlights the fact Celtic show good levels for one half at a time. For instance, but for wastefulness in front of goal they might have been greater than 1-0 up. “There were positives except the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but it's important to stay fair.
“The performance we had at times was of top quality. This is the reality. I wouldn't speak so positively if it was untrue. Therefore, in terms of results, I noted it's a repeating pattern. Which is why I feel we are nearly there to things turning around. Currently: small things.”
“I saw plenty of positives that we did, as was the case today. The issue now comes down to sustaining it. My narrative would change the same. Therefore I am convinced the team can to get back on track.”
Röhl’s Cautious Outlook
Danny Röhl played down talk of a serious challenge in spite of what seemed like a landmark win. “One match at a time, so we can really build up something here,” he said. “The confidence in the team is excellent.”
