British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
