Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Network Praise

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and supported its uniquely offbeat style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
